Intravenous Sedation Team Intravenous sedation is the most pleasant way to have implant dentistry. This service is available at our clinic provided by medical anaesthetists. Sedation is not usually required for a patient having one or two implant placed. For multiple implant placement, bone grafting or sinus elevation procedure we recommend intavenous sedation. Some patients just prefer to have any dentistry provided under conscious IV sedation as it makes for a more pleasant experience. Bone Grafting for Implant Dentistry Bone grafts can be harvested from the patient. When a small amount is required for a few implants this bone can be harvest from the patient's jaw. Extensive bone loss requires bone to be taken from a patient's ileac crest (hip) where reconstructive dentistry with multiple implants are being placed. Bone can also be sourced from a tissue bank or processed bone taken from specially reared cattle, pigs or horses. This proprietory bone is often used to supplement bone taken in small quantities from a patient. Synthetic bone (hydroxyapatite or BioGlas) can be used in certain situations. synthetic materials will remain in your body unlike the natural bone which in time gets removed and gradually replaced with your own bone. Guided Bone Regeneration In many clinical situations in implant dentistry, it is possible for us to create new bone of your own using a technique called guided bone regeneration. Here we place a special membrane over a void which becomes filed with blood and gradually calcifies forming new bone. Often we will partially fill this void with treated animal bone like BioOss to act as a scaffold around which your own bone can grow. This also helps to kee the resorbable membrane from collapsing into the void. In time the BioOss will become resorbed by your body and replaced with your own regenerated bone. |
